Developed by Sculptured Software for Atari in 1990, Fatal Run is a car combat/racing title set in a post-apocalyptic world. Delivering a vaccine for nuclear fallout from city to city, you encounter a strange but feeble car gang that tries its best to interfere with your mission. It is not a fair fight in the least. While they try to ram you off the road and set up road blocks, you are armed to the teeth with machine guns, rockets, oil slicks, shields, nitro, smoke screens, etc. If they succeed in slowing you down, you’ll be treated to a slightly disturbing/very weird scene as you roll into town. The slower you are, the more people that perish (explode) before your eyes as they cheer your arrival. However, if you make good time, you’ll save more people and earn more money that can buy additional weapons, repairs, better armor, car upgrades and gasoline. Then you head out on another leg of the 32 city trek. Of all of the games on the system, Fatal Run probably takes the most amount of time to beat. However, it features a password system that will save you from having to sit still for more than 2 hours racing over the most boring terrain imaginable (think Idaho without the charm). Those who can actually locate the game and endure the grave task at hand will be treated to the best title screen and game ending in the 7800’s library. (Contributed by Cousin Vinnie Vineyard) |
